In particular during emergency braking the anti-locking braking system (ABS) provides more driving safety by preventing the wheels from locking. This assists the driver in maintaining control of the vehicle, for instance during evasive manoeuvres or when braking on a slippery road.

The driving assistance system helps the driver to maintain a safe distance from the traffic ahead and to keep the vehicle in the centre of the lane.

The innovative driver assistance system automatically helps drivers to keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front and removes some of the strain on long journeys and in stop-and-go traffic. COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS warns of falling below the safe following distance visually and audibly.

The radar-based system brakes the vehicle where necessary and then accelerates it again up to the desired speed where this is possible. This reduces the risk of rear-end collisions and increases driving comfort. The choice of "Economy" or "Sport" drive mode also influences the driving characteristics of the automatic proximity control function.

In "Sport" mode, for example, the vehicle accelerates more decidedly and dynamically when changing lane. The system places more emphasis on comfort in the "Economy" mode. "Undertaking" on motorways and similar main roads is prevented by setting the proximity control to vehicles in the overtaking lane.

If there is danger of a collision despite the braking intervention from DISTRONIC PLUS, the COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS is actuated to try to prevent an accident occurring.

When parking becomes a pleasure. Active Parking Assist helps you to find a parking space, park in parallel and perpendicular spaces, and pull out of parallel spaces. It automatically steers the vehicle into parking spaces and spares the driver the steering and braking actions.

If the vehicle is moving at less than 30 km/h, the system indicates automatically that it has found a suitable parking space. By default the system looks on the right side of the road, when the left-side turn indicator is activated also on the left side of the road.

If the driver engages reverse gear and confirms the suggested parking space, Active Parking Assist automatically carries out the steering manoeuvres. The driver only needs to operate the accelerator and brake pedal; in a maximum of seven moves parking is complete.

The system can identify an unintentional drifting out of lane, send a haptic warning (steering-wheel vibrations) to the driver, and can help to return the vehicle to the correct lane by selectively braking individual wheels.

The system makes one of the biggest dangers in road traffic visible – vehicles in the blind spot. If changing lane, for example, it can warn the driver and apply selective braking to individual wheels to avert a potential collision.

If a vehicle is detected within the monitored range, a warning symbol is displayed in the driver's exterior mirror. Should the driver overlook the warning and start to change lanes, the ESP® system can intervene actively and guide the vehicle back into the lane.

In particular on long trips and when driving at night this system can increase driving safety. Based on the driver's actions ATTENTION ASSIST recognises typical signs of fatigue and severe inattentiveness and issues visual and audible warnings of impending microsleep.

The braking system increases driving comfort and safety. On one hand it helps to perform critical braking manoeuvres with the basic function of the ABS anti-lock braking system while convenience functions make coping with daily driving situations easier on the other.

By priming the brakes the brake linings are already applied should the driver takes his foot abruptly off the accelerator. The valuable time won as a result shortens the brakes' response time and can thus reduce the stopping distance.

The system also intervenes to support the driver on uphill gradients, thereby helping to make the journey more relaxed. The Hill-Start Assist function prevents the vehicle from rolling back when moving from the brake to the accelerator pedal

And finally, the brake drying function provides a further boost to safety: In wet conditions, short braking impulses, unnoticeable to the driver, ensure that the water film which forms on the brake discs in wet conditions is removed and the response time of the brakes can be considerably shortened.

If a predetermined crash-force is reached, the brake pedal is moved forward automatically and adopts its braking position. Any further movement in the footwell is prevented. This reduces the risk of injury.

For better visibility on secondary roads and motorways, when turning or cornering, the LED Intelligent Light System adapts to light and driving conditions. In addition to its distinctive visual appeal, LED technology delivers a greater light intensity combined with reduced glare.

Since LED headlamps are closer to the colour spectrum of daylight than xenon headlamps, for example, they are easier on the driver's eyes. We consistently implement LED technology, ensuring that bulb changes are no longer necessary throughout the vehicle's service life.

No need to search for your vehicle. The "Coming Home" function with blue LED locator lighting for remote opening/closing lets you find your car in no time.

The reversing camera offers convenience and added safety. The camera integrated in the boot lid shows the area behind the vehicle on the central display. The camera image not only makes parking easier but also aids in manoeuvring on terrain with restricted visibility.

Inattention and fatigue can result in you drifting out of your lane without realising it. The system can recognise inadvertent lane departures and can warn the driver with pulsating steering-wheel vibrations.

The system visualizes one of the major hazards in traffic. If a vehicle is detected in the blind spot, a red triangle appears in the exterior mirror. Should the driver fail to notice the visual clue and activate the turn indicator, the system issues an additional audible warning.

The anticipatory Brake Assist system BAS PLUS can reduce the risk of rear-end and junction collisions.

Radar sensors and a stereo camera are used to permanently record and evaluate the situation ahead of the vehicle. In doing so, the system assesses not only the vehicle ahead, but also – up to a speed of 72 km/h – crossing vehicles and pedestrians.

If the driver identifies a potential accident and applies the brakes, BAS PLUS supplies additional braking pressure to ideally prevent a collision. If an impact is unavoidable, a full brake application reduces the impact speed as much as possible.

Every Mercedes-Benz vehicle boasts decades of experience in safety technology – making critical situations more and more unlikely. If things should nevertheless get serious, this system is at hand to provide preventive and protective measures.

The PRE-SAFE® system delivers a combination of active and passive protection. Seat belts and airbags can protect vehicle occupants more effectively if they incorporate active systems such as driving assistance packages or Brake Assist.

PRE-SAFE® evaluates sensor data from other systems, such as the Electronic Stability Program ESP® and Brake Assist system BAS, and can identify scenarios such as heavy over/understeer and emergency braking.

The system is able to identify critical handling situations in advance and initiate preventive measures for occupant protection in the event of an impending accident. These include reversible belt tensioning for the front seats and automatic closing of side windows.

Our vehicles offer a wealth of safety technology. Some of them you'll never get to see. And this is a good thing as they are only there for worst case scenarios. To protect you and your passengers.

In a collision the airbags help to protect the upper torso and head of driver and front passenger. They also help to stabilise the whole body. This can mitigate the risk of severe injuries in an accident. The deployment of the airbags is commensurate to the severity of the impact.

The integrated automatic seat occupancy sensor can activate or deactivate the front-passenger airbag independently of the recognised seat occupancy using a pressure-sensitive sensor mat according to classification result. The front-passenger airbag is deactivated with a rear-facing child seat, for example.

The knee airbag on the driver’s side helps to protect the legs in a collision and also stabilises the entire body. It can thus help mitigate the potential severity of injuries sustained in an accident.

In a side-on collision the side airbags help to protect the upper torso and pelvic area of driver and front passenger. They also help to stabilise the whole body. This can mitigate the risk of severe injuries in an accident.

In a side-on collision the window airbag covers the side windows and can help reduce the risk of the head impacting the sides of the vehicle or intruding objects. It protects the driver, front passenger and passengers on the outer rear seats.
