Is it possible to change gear without noticing it or feeling the dip in engine output? It is with the 7-speed automatic transmission fitted as standard by Mercedes-Benz. The new GL is equipped with 7G-TRONIC PLUS ex factory, which turns the power of the engine into total refinement. It provides the right gear ratio for every driving situation.
In conjunction with other consumption-reducing measures, the consumption and efficiency-optimised 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission features a compellingly reduced fuel consumption, precision gearshifts and reduced noise.

The 7G-TRONIC AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS sports transmission offers a combination of unique functions that provide the driver with complete freedom. In addition to an agile, quick-response multiple downshift capability and an automatic double-declutching function, the high-performance transmission has three individual transmission modes to choose from. Controlled Efficiency (or "C" for short) stands for consumption-optimised driving, particularly in combination with the new ECO start/stop function (can switch off the engine temporarily when the vehicle is not moving). By contrast, the transmission modes "S" (Sport) and "M" (Manual) enhance both driving pleasure and dynamic flair. They make gear changes in fractions of a second possible when upshifting. As you would expect from an AMG, it has a powerful, sonorous engine sound in all transmission modes.
