State-of-the-art restraint systems meet the traditionally stringent requirements of Mercedes-Benz regarding passive safety. 3-point seat belts with tensioners and belt-force limiters are included as standard for all Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG occupants. The safety system also boasts eight airbags: two adaptive airbags for driver and front passenger, one kneebag each for driver and front passenger, two sidebags integrated in the seats and two separate windowbags. The SLS body features outstanding rigidity and high deformation reserves which can absorb collision energy and thus protect the occupants from injury.
A large number of components supporting the integrated ADAPTIVE BRAKE system contribute to active safety. The latter increases driving comfort and safety, on the one hand, by working together with the ASR, ESPĀ®, ABS und BAS dynamic control systems to make it easier to perform critical manoeuvres successfully, and on the other hand, through its comfort functions, helping deal with demanding handling situations.
These also include the HOLD function which is activated by briefly depressing the brake pedal. The HOLD function then keeps the vehicle from rolling unintentionally when stopped at a light or in stop-and-go traffic. The hill-start assist function prevents the vehicle from rolling back unexpectedly on inclines when changing from the brake to the gas pedal. The "brake drying" function ensures that full braking effect is spontaneously available even under wet conditions. And with the "priming" programme the system reduces the response time of the brakes.
The bi-xenon headlamps provide higher brightness values, a larger range of light and wider illumination of the road surface than conventional headlamps. In addition, the LED daytime driving lights, adaptive brake lights and the LED indicators make the vehicle more visible to other road users.
