The integrated safety concept from Mercedes-Benz

Virtually no other area inspires the Mercedes-Benz engineers to produce such consistently impressive results as much as research into new safety technologies. The first important safety milestone was reached back in the 1950s with the development of the passenger safety cell, invented by Béla Barényi. Today it is just one of many components of the integral safety concept which edges us ever closer to our vision of accident-free driving.

Safe driving

A large number of components supporting the integrated ADAPTIVE BRAKE system contribute to Active Safety. The latter increases driving comfort and safety, on the one hand, by working together with the ASR, ESP, ABS und BAS dynamic control systems to make it easier to perform critical manoeuvres successfully, and on the other hand, through its comfort functions, helping deal with demanding handling situations.

ADAPTIVE BRAKE system with Hill-Start Assist A large number of components supporting the integrated ADAPTIVE BRAKE system contribute to active safety. The latter increases driving comfort and safety, on the one hand, by working together with the ASR, ESP®, ABS und BAS dynamic control systems to make it easier to perform critical manoeuvres successfully, and on the other hand, through its comfort functions, helping deal with demanding handling situations. Hill-start assist prevents the vehicle from rolling unintentionally on inclines when switching from brake to accelerator. The "brake drying" function ensures that full braking power is available, even in wet conditions. The "priming" function enables the system to reduce brake response time.
Bi-xenon headlamps with LED daytime driving lamps The bi-xenon headlamps provide higher brightness values, a larger range of light and wider illumination of the road surface than conventional headlamps. In addition, the LED daytime driving lights and the LED indicators make the vehicle more visible to other road users. Extendable high-pressure nozzles allow the headlamps to be cleaned while the car is in motion.
Blind Spot Assist (optional) Operating at speeds between 30 and 250 km/h, Active Blind Spot Assist monitors the area behind the vehicle as well as to the left and right. If a vehicle is detected in the monitored area, a warning signal appears in the relevant exterior mirror. If the driver then operates the indicator, an additional audible warning is sounded. This also happens if vehicles move from two lanes away into the lane alongside the driver.

During an accident

State-of-the-art restraint systems meet the traditionally stringent requirements of Mercedes-Benz regarding Passive Safety. Specific safety aspects related to open-top driving round off the safety concept of the SLS AMG Roadster.

A secure holding: The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is equipped with three-point seat belts featuring belt tensioners and belt force limiters as standard.
Always there when you need it: The comprehensive safety equipment range also boasts eight airbags: Two adaptive airbags for the driver and front passenger, kneebags for driver and front passenger, two sidebags integrated in the seats and two separate headbags.
Lightweight and resistant to deformation: The SLS AMG Roadster’s body features a high rigidity and deformation reserves which absorb the collision energy and can thus protect occupants from injury.
Protection in extreme situations: with two fixed roll-over bars behind the headrests the SLS AMG Roadster ensures the greatest possible roll-over protection both with the top closed and the top down.
