ADAPTIVE BRAKE with Hill-Start Assist, HOLD function, priming and dry braking in wet conditions The braking system increases driving comfort and safety. On one hand it helps to perform critical braking manoeuvres with the basic function of the ABS anti-lock braking system while convenience functions make coping with daily driving situations easier on the other. By priming the brakes the brake linings are already applied should the driver takes his foot abruptly off the accelerator. The valuable time won as a result shortens the brakes' response time and can thus reduce the stopping distance.
The HOLD function relieves the driver when stopping at traffic lights or in stop-and-go traffic by preventing unintentional rolling back of the vehicle. If the brake pedal is firmly depressed for a short time, it then maintains the braking pressure, allowing the driver to take his foot off the brake. The function switches itself off again automatically as the car moves off.
The system also intervenes to support the driver on uphill gradients, thereby helping to make the journey more relaxed. The Hill-Start Assist function prevents the vehicle from rolling back when moving from the brake to the accelerator pedal
And finally, the brake drying function provides a further boost to safety: In wet conditions, short braking impulses, unnoticeable to the driver, ensure that the water film which forms on the brake discs in wet conditions is removed and the response time of the brakes can be considerably shortened.

Adaptive brake lights, flashing The flashing brake lights can help in an emergency situation to significantly shorten the reaction time of road users following behind. The LED adaptive brake lights thus make an important contribution to preventing rear-end collisions. Durable LED technology is deployed here, which ensures better recognisability than with conventional bulb sets. In emergency braking the brake lamps flash at a frequency of approx. five hertz, which has been proven to be effective in tests.
If the vehicle is brought to a complete standstill from a speed greater than 70 km/h, the hazard warning lamps switch on automatically. In this way the system provides additional safety, for example at the end of a tailback on a motorway.

Airbag for driver and front passenger, with enhanced adaptivity for front passenger airbag In a collision the airbags help to protect the upper torso and head of driver and front passenger. They also help to stabilise the whole body. This can mitigate the risk of severe injuries in an accident. The deployment of the airbags is commensurate to the severity of the impact. The two airbags are inflated in two stages. With the front passenger airbag, the adaptive stage ensures that the inflation is varied according to needs, dependent on the seating position and stature of the front passenger.
If there is a Mercedes-Benz-approved child seat on the front passenger seat, the optional child seat recognition system ACSR will automatically deactivate the front passenger airbag. In this way small children in the child seat are protected from injuries caused by the inflating front passenger airbag, in particular for child seats designed to face towards the back.

Active bonnet with pedestrian protection The bonnet is raised up in a frontal collision with a pedestrian or cyclist. The increased clearance between the bonnet and the components in the engine compartment creates additional deformation space to absorb an impact sooner and thus mitigate the risk of injury.

Anti-lock braking system (ABS) In particular during emergency braking the anti-locking braking system (ABS) provides more driving safety by preventing the wheels from locking. This assists the driver in maintaining control of the vehicle, for instance during evasive manoeuvres or when braking on a slippery road.

Acceleration skid control (ASR) Moving off or accelerating on snow, wet roads or lose ground – under these circumstances ASR acceleration skid control reduces wheel slip to prevent the vehicle from skidding.

In particular on long trips and when driving at night this system can increase driving safety. Based on the driver's actions ATTENTION ASSIST recognises typical signs of fatigue and severe inattentiveness and issues visual and audible warnings of impending microsleep. The system analyses the driver's driving style at speeds between 60 and 200 km/h, and issues an audible and visual warning as soon as it detects a deviation from the established way of driving.

BAS Brake Assist system with brake force boost upon detection of emergency stop The system can recognise an emergency stop by the driver and increases the brake pressure within fractions of a second to shorten the stopping distance. To do so, Brake Assist interprets the speed at which the brake pedal is depressed. The anti-lock braking system (ABS) simultaneously meters the braking power up to the slip threshold so that the vehicle remains steerable. As soon as the driver releases the brake pedal, the automatic brake boosting is turned off again.

Brake pad wear indicator warning lamp for front axle brakes The brake pad wear indicator lamp warns the driver if the brake pads on the front axle brakes are worn and need to be replaced. The driver no longer needs to personally check the condition of the brake pads.

COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST including Adaptive Brake Assist The system warns the driver visually and audibly of insufficient distance to the vehicle travelling ahead or of stationary objects. If COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST detects a dangerous situation it can assist the driver's braking action to ideally prevent a rear-end collision.

ESP® Electronic Stability Program In critical handling situations the Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) can keep the vehicle from skidding. With targeted brake interventions on individual wheels ESP® reduces oversteer or understeer tendencies and thus increases handling safety.

ESP® Dynamic Curve Assist The ESP®-based system provides more stability and handling safety in particular when accelerating on bends. If the ESP® sensors register a tendency to understeer, it can reduce this tendency with a targeted brake intervention on the inside wheels.

Depending on the ambient light Headlamp Assist automatically switches the dipped-beam on or off. In particular under fast changing light conditions the system can thus enhance driving safety and relieve the burden on the driver, e.g. when driving through tunnels or in multi-storey car parks.

Electric parking brake with automatic release when moving off A handle below the light switch allows simple and safe operation of the electric parking brake. For even more convenience and safety the electric parking brake is automatically engaged or released in certain situations.

Status display for rear seat belts in instrument cluster | |
Tail lights with LED technology The tail lamps show a characteristic design by day and night. Use of LED technology improves their visibility. The intensity of turn indicators and brake light varies depending on ambient light and speed to reduce the dazzle effect for other road others.

Automatic dimming for interior and driver's side exterior mirrors[1] Automatically dimming mirrors improve perceptual safety and relieve the burden on the driver. The driver's side exterior mirror and the rear-view mirror automatically dim depending on the amount of dazzle and the ambient light. Manual adjustment is no longer necessary.

ISOFIX child seat attachment points with Top Tether in rear The system allows simple, fast and safe attachment of ISOIFIX child seats for optimal protection of the child in an accident. TopTether anchoring points offer added safety by anchoring the child seat behind the head restraints.

LED High Performance headlamps The LED high-performance headlamps provide more safety at night and an unmistakable, distinctive look. Thanks to LED technology they illuminate the road better than conventional headlamps – with less dazzle effect and lower energy use.

LED rear fog lamp, centred in the rear apron | |
In the early phase of a frontal collision the safety belts pull the occupants deeper into the seat. At the moment of peak loads the retracted distance is released again in a controlled manner. This allows PRE-SAFE® Impulse to significantly reduce the risk of injury. This function works on the front seats through the three-point safety belt system. The major difference between this and conventional systems is that the power pulling in the seat belt can be maintained for a significantly longer period of time than was hitherto usual.

The system is able to identify critical handling situations in advance and initiate preventive measures for occupant protection in the event of an impending accident. These include e.g. the reversible belt tensioning or the automatic closing of any open windows. The system comprises the following functions:
- Readies vehicle occupants and the vehicle for a possible impact
- Supports the protective effect of seat belts and airbags, dependent on the vehicle model and its the vehicle equipment
- Increases occupant safety through triggering various safety mechanisms
- Protects the occupants from objects penetrating and flying around in the interior

Tyre pressure loss warning system | |
In strong, gusty crosswind the system can help the driver to remain in the lane. Targeted brake interventions significantly reduce the vehicle's lateral offset. This enhances the driver's sense of security and helps prevent undue reactions.

ASSYST service interval indicator The ASSYST service interval display computes the date of the next service based on driving style and displays it in the instrument cluster.

Seat belts, 3-point, including mechanical belt height adjustment system, pyrotechnic tensioning and belt force limiters Driver and front passenger both have a 3-point safety belt with pyrotechnical belt tensioning and belt force limiters as well as a reversible belt tensioner. The upper seat belt guide is anchored on the B-pillar and height adjustable.
The belt is tensioned pyrotechnically at each of the three belt anchoring points by means of special force characteristics following a defined escalation scenario and released again under controlled force.

Sidebags for driver and front passenger (combined thorax/pelvis airbag) In a side-on collision the sidebags help to protect the upper torso and pelvic area of driver and front passenger. They also help to stabilise the whole body. This can mitigate the risk of severe injuries in an accident.

Sidebags in the rear, left and right The chest of the rear-seat passengers is protected by the sidebags in a side-on collision. They are integrated into the rear side panelling and inflate at chest height between the side of the vehicle and the occupants. They are triggered if the crash sensors register acceleration or deceleration forces acting on the vehicle in excess of a specific threshold. The sidebags deploy at chest height between the side of the vehicle and the occupant.

Cruise control with SPEEDTRONIC variable speed limiter Cruise control with SPEEDTRONIC allows relaxed and fuel-saving driving especially on long journeys. In addition to the desired cruising speed the system also allow setting an individual top speed, for example, to safely comply with speed limits.

TIREFIT with tyre inflation compressor The TIREFIT tyre sealant is a fast interim solution and allows continuing on to the nearest workshop in the event of a tyre puncture. It is filled into the flat tyre using a tyre inflation compressor located in the boot and seals tyre punctures.

The system is able to recognise speed limits, "no-entry" and "no-overtaking" signs and their cancellation, and show them in the instrument cluster. If the appropriate signs are posted, the system issues a visual and audible warning when the driver enters a street contrary to road traffic regulations against the specified direction of travel. The camera on the inside of the front windscreen continues to capture signed speed limits, including those on gantry signs or in roadworks, for example. The data are compared with the data held in the navigation system and can be displayed both in the instrument cluster and in the map view.
No overtaking signs and their discontinuation signs are registered and displayed. In addition, for no-entry signs, a visual and audible warning signal is shown/played in the instrument cluster – an effective contribution towards avoiding serious accidents caused by wrong-way drivers.
