Design – intelligent interplay. Lighter in weight, outstandingly rigid, supremely comfortable: the intelligent and innovative lightweight design of the new C-Class Saloon gives it outstanding characteristics. With the result: Thanks to the large number of aluminium components and ultra-high-strength materials in the new C-Class Saloon, the overall weight of the vehicle has been reduced by up to 100 kilograms. This reduction of weight helps to reduce consumption. A technological leap which Mercedes-Benz has made thanks to the completely new design and - for a volume production vehicle - unusually extensive use of aluminium panels, thermoformed steel parts and ultra-high-strength steel.
Research – a global leader. We have systematically built on and extended our expertise in lightweight construction over the years. Today we are able to produce metal and plastic vehicle assemblies in a single process step. The assemblies produced in this way are particularly lightweight and thus make an important contribution to weight reduction. The challenge we had to meet: solve the complex interaction of metal-forming and plastics injection-moulding. To do this, we took modern welding processes several steps further, and also developed a combination of internal high-pressure forming and plastics injection-moulding which we are deploying in series production of the new C-Class Saloon. The applied technology is a world first - our aluminium hybrid vehicle body is a "lightweight pioneer" in its segment. To achieve this, our engineers had to design every detail from scratch - it was by no means a case of simply replacing steel with aluminium. Instead they had to implement a design using the right material in the right place that was feasible for large-scale production - intelligent lightweight construction!
Safety – difficult to surpass. The new C-Class Saloon not only complies with all current national safety ratings. It also meets the further-reaching Mercedes-Benz standards which aim to provide ultimate "real life safety". The prerequisite for this is an extremely rigid safety passenger compartment. It is made primarily from high-strength and ultra-high-strength sheet steel and has specifically designed-in deformation zones, a rear end made from an aluminium composite design and an outer skin made almost entirely from aluminium.
