Virtually no other area inspires the Mercedes-Benz engineers to produce such consistently impressive results as much as research into new safety technologies. The first important safety milestone was reached back in the 1950s with the development of the passenger safety cell, invented by Béla Barényi. Today it is just one of many components of the Integral Safety Concept which edges Mercedes-Benz vehicles ever closer to our vision of accident-free driving.
Equipment availability depends on the engine and configuration selected. You will find details in the equipment information for each model.
The majority of accidents start long before the actual collision: with a lapse in concentration, poor visibility or hazards which cannot be anticipated. That's why the Mercedes-Benz safety concept employs a range of measures to support safe driving in everyday operation and to help you bring critical situations under control.
Anti-lock braking system (ABS) In particular during emergency braking the anti-locking braking system (ABS) provides more driving safety by preventing the wheels from locking. This assists the driver in maintaining control of the vehicle, for instance during evasive manoeuvres or when braking on a slippery road. |
DISTRONIC PLUS proximity control with STEER CONTROL (optional) The driving assistance system helps the driver to maintain a safe distance from the traffic ahead and to keep the vehicle in the centre of the lane. DISTRONIC PLUS with STEER CONTROL and Stop & Go Pilot make your life easier, particularly on long journeys and when following vehicles in a traffic jam. Available only in conjunction with the optional Driving Assistance Package PLUS. |
DISTRONIC PLUS proximity control including COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS (optional) The innovative driver assistance system automatically helps drivers to keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front and removes some of the strain on long journeys and in stop-and-go traffic. COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS warns of falling below the safe following distance visually and audibly. The radar-based system brakes the vehicle where necessary and then accelerates it again up to the desired speed where this is possible. This reduces the risk of rear-end collisions and increases driving comfort. The choice of "Economy" or "Sport" drive mode also influences the driving characteristics of the automatic proximity control function. |
Active Parking Assist including PARKTRONIC (optional) When parking becomes a pleasure. Active Parking Assist helps you to find a parking space, park in parallel and perpendicular spaces, and pull out of parallel spaces. It automatically steers the vehicle into parking spaces and spares the driver the steering and braking actions. If the vehicle is moving at less than 30 km/h, the system indicates automatically that it has found a suitable parking space. By default the system looks on the right side of the road, when the left-side turn indicator is activated also on the left side of the road.
Active Lane Keeping Assist (optional) The system can identify an unintentional drifting out of lane, send a haptic warning (steering-wheel vibrations) to the driver, and can help to return the vehicle to the correct lane by selectively braking individual wheels. |
Active Blind Spot Assist (optional) The system makes one of the biggest dangers in road traffic visible – vehicles in the blind spot. If changing lane, for example, it can warn the driver and apply selective braking to individual wheels to avert a potential collision. If a vehicle is detected within the monitored range, a warning symbol is displayed in the driver's exterior mirror. Should the driver overlook the warning and start to change lanes, the ESP® system can intervene actively and guide the vehicle back into the lane. |
ATTENTION ASSIST We are watching you. But only with your safety in mind. Our analysis of your driving ensures that you remember to take a break. For your own safety. In particular on long trips and when driving at night this system can increase driving safety. Based on the driver's actions ATTENTION ASSIST recognises typical signs of fatigue and severe inattentiveness and issues visual and audible warnings of impending microsleep. |
ADAPTIVE BRAKE braking system We prioritise safety in our vehicles – beginning with the standard equipment. Proven systems protect you in situations that can occur daily in road traffic. The braking system increases driving comfort and safety. On one hand it helps to perform critical braking manoeuvres with the basic function of the ABS anti-lock braking system while convenience functions make coping with daily driving situations easier on the other. |
Crash-optimised pedals If a predetermined crash-force is reached, the brake pedal is moved forward automatically and adopts its braking position. Any further movement in the footwell is prevented. This reduces the risk of injury. |
LED Intelligent Light System (optional) Watch how your vehicle also watches. And responds: Different weather, light and driving conditions mean different demands on vehicle lighting. For better visibility on secondary roads and motorways, when turning or cornering, the LED Intelligent Light System adapts to light and driving conditions. In addition to its distinctive visual appeal, LED technology delivers a greater light intensity combined with reduced glare.
Reversing camera (optional) The reversing camera offers convenience and added safety. The camera integrated in the boot lid shows the area behind the vehicle on the central display. The camera image not only makes parking easier but also aids in manoeuvring on terrain with restricted visibility. |
Lane Keeping Assist (optional) Inattention and fatigue can result in you drifting out of your lane without realising it. The system can recognise inadvertent lane departures and can warn the driver with pulsating steering-wheel vibrations. |
Blind Spot Assist (optional) The system visualizes one of the major hazards in traffic. If a vehicle is detected in the blind spot, a red triangle appears in the exterior mirror. Should the driver fail to notice the visual clue and activate the turn indicator, the system issues an additional audible warning. |
Mercedes-Benz stands for automotive safety. That's why our vehicles can support their passengers even in critical driving situations, so that every journey is as safe as it can possibly be.
Brake Assist system BAS PLUS with Cross-Traffic Assist (optional) The anticipatory Brake Assist system BAS PLUS can reduce the risk of rear-end and junction collisions. Radar sensors and a stereo camera are used to permanently record and evaluate the situation ahead of the vehicle. In doing so, the system assesses not only the vehicle ahead, but also – up to a speed of 72 km/h – crossing vehicles and pedestrians. |
PRE-SAFE® occupant protection system (optional) Every Mercedes-Benz vehicle boasts decades of experience in safety technology – making critical situations more and more unlikely. If things should nevertheless get serious, this system is at hand to provide preventive and protective measures. The PRE-SAFE® system delivers a combination of active and passive protection. Seat belts and airbags can protect vehicle occupants more effectively if they incorporate active systems such as driving assistance packages or Brake Assist.
Cars from Mercedes-Benz have a host of safety systems to prevent accidents. Should the worst come to the worst, however, a comprehensive range of occupant safety measures are activated. They include protection for the vehicle occupants as well as for other road users.
Airbags for driver and front passenger Our vehicles offer a wealth of safety technology. Some of them you'll never get to see. And this is a good thing as they are only there for worst case scenarios. To protect you and your passengers. In a collision the airbags help to protect the upper torso and head of driver and front passenger. They also help to stabilise the whole body. This can mitigate the risk of severe injuries in an accident. The deployment of the airbags is commensurate to the severity of the impact. |
Kneebag for driver The knee airbag on the driver’s side helps to protect the legs in a collision and also stabilises the entire body. It can thus help mitigate the potential severity of injuries sustained in an accident. |
Sidebags for driver and front passenger In a side-on collision the side airbags help to protect the upper torso and pelvic area of driver and front passenger. They also help to stabilise the whole body. This can mitigate the risk of severe injuries in an accident. |
Windowbags for driver and front passenger In a side-on collision the window airbag covers the side windows and can help reduce the risk of the head impacting the sides of the vehicle or intruding objects. It protects the driver, front passenger and passengers on the outer rear seats. |
To reduce consequential damage after an accident and support the work of the rescue services, a number of different actions are initiated, depending on the type and severity of the accident:
Every second counts when it comes to occupant rescue after an accident. That's why Daimler has devised the rescue sticker, a small but effective innovation that gives emergency services immediate access to safety-relevant vehicle-specific design details at the scene of the accident. The QR code stickers are affixed to the vehicle's fuel tank cap and the B-pillar on the opposite side. They can easily be retrofitted and are part of the series specification for all new vehicles. In an emergency, rescue services personnel can scan the QR code with a Smartphone or Tablet to rapidly and reliably access the appropriate rescue card, which will assist them in their work [1].
To complete its holistic safety philosophy, Mercedes-Benz has also published multilingual rescue guidelines (accessible worldwide on the internet) as a preventive measure for rescue services.
