ADAPTIVE BRAKE with HOLD function, Hill-Start Assist, priming and dry braking in wet conditions The braking system increases driving comfort and safety. On one hand it helps to perform critical braking manoeuvres with the basic function of the ABS anti-lock braking system while convenience functions make coping with daily driving situations easier on the other.
It prevents unintentional rolling of the vehicle on inclines when switching from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal. The "pre-fill" function ensures that the brake pads are already put in contact with the brake discs as soon as the driver releases the accelerator pedal. The resulting time saving can shorten the stopping distance.
In the wet the "brake drying" function automatically removes the film of water from the brake discs to shorten the brake response time. The HOLD function lets you keep the vehicle stationary without having to keep your foot on the brake pedal.

Adaptive brake lights, flashing The flashing brake lights can help in an emergency situation to significantly shorten the reaction time of road users following behind. The adaptive brake lights thus make an important contribution to preventing rear-end collisions.
They are activated if the initial speed is greater than 50 km/h and Brake Assist BAS has recognised an emergency braking situation; or the brake pressure is more than 75 percent of the maximum. In addition, the hazard warning lights are activated when the vehicle comes to a standstill if the speed prior to braking exceeded 70 km/h.

Airbags for driver and front passenger In a collision the airbags help to protect the upper torso and head of driver and front passenger. They also help to stabilise the whole body. This can mitigate the risk of severe injuries in an accident. The deployment of the airbags is commensurate to the severity of the impact.

The bonnet is raised up in a frontal collision with a pedestrian or cyclist. The increased clearance between the bonnet and the components in the engine compartment creates additional deformation space to absorb an impact sooner and thus mitigate the risk of injury.
not available for the GLA 45 AMG 4MATIC.

Anti-lock braking system (ABS) In particular during emergency braking the anti-locking braking system (ABS) provides more driving safety by preventing the wheels from locking. This assists the driver in maintaining control of the vehicle, for instance during evasive manoeuvres or when braking on a slippery road.
To do this, sensors permanently monitor the rotation speed of each wheel. Before a wheel is on the verge of locking up, the braking pressure is lowered. When the danger of locking has been averted, the pressure is increased again.

Acceleration skid control (ASR) Moving off or accelerating on snow, wet roads or lose ground – under these circumstances ASR acceleration skid control reduces wheel slip to prevent the vehicle from skidding.
For this purpose sensors measure the rotational speed of the wheels. If a sudden increase in rotational speed (slip) at one of the driven wheels is detected, ASR intervenes in the engine management, adjusts engine output and applies the brakes to stop the wheel from spinning.

In particular on long trips and when driving at night this system can increase driving safety. Based on the driver's actions ATTENTION ASSIST recognises typical signs of fatigue and severe inattentiveness and issues visual and audible warnings of impending microsleep.
At speeds between 80 and 180 km/h ATTENTION ASSIST permanently analyses driver behaviour and steering input. If the system detects certain steering patterns that frequently accompany drowsiness, it warns the driver visually by displaying the "coffee cup" symbol in the instrument cluster at the same time as emitting audible signals.

BAS Brake Assist system with brake force boost upon detection of emergency stop The system can recognise an emergency stop by the driver and increases the brake pressure within fractions of a second to shorten the stopping distance. To do so, Brake Assist interprets the speed at which the brake pedal is depressed.

Brake pad wear indicator in the display The brake pad wear indicator lamp warns the driver in the display if the brake pads on the front axle brakes are worn and need to be replaced.

COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST warns the driver visually and audibly of insufficient distance to the vehicle travelling ahead or of stationary objects. Adaptive Brake Assist helps the driver to brake to prevent rear-ending the vehicle travelling ahead.
When travelling at speeds of more than 7 km/h, the system can recognise insufficient gaps to vehicles ahead. When the system detects the danger of a rear-end collision, it can emit a visual and acoustic warning to the driver.
If the system detects a danger and the driver applies the brakes at the same time, Adaptive Brake Assist can intervene for good measure: It then provides precisely the right amount of brake pressure that is needed ideally to avoid an impending collision.

Crash-responsive emergency lighting After an accident the hazard warning lights are activated automatically, and the interior lights are turned on to provide easier orientation for the vehicle occupants and the rescue personnel.

Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) In critical handling situations the Electronic Stability Program ESP® can keep the vehicle from skidding. With targeted brake interventions on individual wheels ESP® reduces oversteer or understeer tendencies and thus increases handling safety.
In addition, the engine output is adjusted as needed. A yaw-rate sensor continuously monitors vehicle movement around its vertical axis and ESP® compares the actual values measured with the target value, which is based on the driver's steering input and the vehicle speed.
The instant the vehicle deviates from this ideal line, ESP® intervenes by working to counteract any swerving movements as they occur. This way, ESP® helps the driver to stabilise the vehicle within the laws of physics – particularly when cornering and during sudden evasive manoeuvres.
Not available for the GLA 45 AMG 4MATIC.

ESP® Dynamic Curve Assist The ESP®-based system provides more stability and handling safety in particular when accelerating on bends. If the ESP® sensors register a tendency to understeer, it can reduce this tendency with a targeted brake intervention on the inside wheels.
The intervention results in a gentle rotation of the vehicle around its vertical axis, which counters understeer. At the same time the torque is slightly increased to compensate the braking torque and the excess torque is sent to the outer wheel. This adds even more precision and control when steering the vehicle around a bend.

A handle below the light switch allows simple and safe operation of the electric parking brake. It is released by pulling on it when the ignition is switched on and set by pushing it. This can also be done when the ignition key has been removed.
A red control lamp in the instrument cluster indicates that the parking brake is engaged. In conjunction with the 7G-DCT dual clutch transmission the brake is released automatically when starting off as soon as the driver operates the accelerator pedal. To safeguard the vehicle's immobility, the parking brake is set automatically under certain conditions.

Fluid level warning indicator for fuel, oil, coolant and screen wash | |
Status display for rear seat belts in instrument cluster The status indicator lets the driver know whether all rear-seat passengers are securely belted in. The multifunction display on the instrument cluster indicates how many rear-seat seat-belt catches are engaged with their corresponding clasps.

ISOFIX child seat attachment points with TopTether in rear The system allows simple, fast and safe attachment of ISOFIX child seats for optimal protection of the child in an accident. TopTether anchoring points offer added safety by anchoring the child seat behind the head restraints.

Childproof locks, manually operated on the rear doors, and power windows in the rear To prevent children in the rear from opening the doors or windows on their own, the rear doors can be secured mechanically and the power windows electrically. The doors can then only be opened from the outside and the power windows only with the switches in the driver's door.

The knee airbag on the driver’s side helps to protect the legs in a collision and also stabilises the entire body. It can thus help mitigate the potential severity of injuries sustained in an accident.

Tyre pressure loss warning system The wheel electronics on the tyre valves on the four wheels measure the tyre pressure and temperature in the initial state and in changing conditions. These data are registered by an aerial in each wheel arch and transmitted to the control unit. Information on tyre pressure is displayed in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster.

Disc brakes (4), vented at the front not available for the GLA 45 AMG 4MATIC.

ASSYST service interval indicator The ASSYST service interval display computes the date of the next service based on driving style and displays it in the instrument cluster.

Seat belts, 3-point, including mechanical belt height adjustment system, pyrotechnic tensioning and belt force limiters Driver and front passenger each have a three-point safety belt with pyrotechnical belt tensioning and belt force limiter as well as a reversible electric belt tensioner in conjunction with the optional PRE-SAFE® system.

Sidebags for driver and front passenger (combined thorax/pelvis bags) In a side-on collision the side airbags help to protect the upper torso and pelvic area of driver and front passenger. They also help to stabilise the whole body. This can mitigate the risk of severe injuries in an accident.
They are triggered when the central control unit and the side satellite sensors register acceleration or deceleration forces acting on the vehicle in excess of a certain threshold. The sidebags deploy at chest height between the vehicle side and the occupant.

Cruise control with SPEEDTRONIC variable speed limiter Cruise control with SPEEDTRONIC allows relaxed and fuel-saving driving especially on long journeys. In addition to the desired cruising speed the system also allow setting an individual top speed, for example, to safely comply with speed limits.
Optional extra in conjunction with 6-speed manual gearbox.

Warning buzzer and warning indicator in instrument cluster if seat belts are not fastened, parking lamps not switched off or parking brake not applied. While driving an audible signals warns of unbelted passengers or an engaged parking brake. At the same time a red warning lamp lights up. The warning buzzer also sounds when the driver's door is opened while the position markers are switched on and the key has been removed from the ignition.

The immobiliser prevents the vehicle from being started with anything but the proper key. It is activated when the key is removed from the ignition and automatically switches itself off when the ignition is switched on.

In a side-on collision the window airbag covers the side windows and can help reduce the risk of the head impacting the sides of the vehicle or intruding objects. It protects the driver, front passenger and passengers on the outer rear seats.

Central locking with interior switch, automatic locking (can be deactivated) and crash sensor with emergency opening The doors and the liftgate are automatically locked while the vehicle is moving to prevent unauthorised opening from the outside. In an accident a crash sensor immediately unlocks all doors to allow emergency services to rescue the passengers quickly.
